Hashima Island aka Battleship Island.

Hashima Island or simply "Hashima," as the suffix -shima already means "island" in Japanese, commonly called Gunkanjima (meaning "Battleship Island") is one among 505 uninhabited islands in the Nagasaki Prefecture about 15 kilometers from Nagasaki itself. The island was populated from 1887 to 1974 as a coal mining facility. The island's most notable features are the abandoned concrete buildings and the sea wall surrounding it.

  2. It's sad that people lived to crowded together like that. How trapped they must have felt in life and in their minds - even though there were 12 crossing to shore a day. I would find it to be a facsinating place to visit and explore. Most interesting place, you're right.

Sad when he goes to his girlfriend home, he says she died 10 years ago exactly. I'm not sure if I heard this correctly but right afer that I think he said, "lung cancer", although there were not subtitles for that. I would imagine that a lot of people who lived there died prematurely from illness and disease.

He said, "it like the souls of the dead linger", I got that sense as well. I have from watching videos of other ghost towns too.

On the upside, I think they must of had a very strong sense of community and a lot of friends.

  3. Hi Tricia .
Yes it's a very common disease with miners to have lung probs (Black Lung /Disease).
And yes they had probably a very close community there ,what struck me the most is the lack of (healthy)space for kids were they can play in nature, it reminds me of a Russian work camp only more freedom.
Every thing pressed together in a small place for the good of production.
