Scott's Hut aka the Terra Nova hut is a building located on the north shore of Cape Evans on Ross Island in Antarctica. It was erected in 1911 by the British Antarctic Expedition of 1910–1913 (also known as the Terra Nova Expedition) led by Robert Falcon Scott. From here Scott and four companions set out on the ultimately fatal trek to the South Pole. Although abandoned in 1913, the hut and its contents are remarkably well preserved today due to the consistently sub-freezing conditions.

hi....
ReplyDeleteThese men were so courageous to travel to antartica then. Ifind it cute andinteresting that Priestly found a tin of butter, jam, plum pudding and gingerbread biscuits from the older site and they were still perfectly fresh. I would think so because they had been frozen all that time. What a delicious discovery ;)
ReplyDeleteIt's very interesting that they used seaweed as instalation and for blankets. I don't think that I would have ever thought of that. Must have been warm.
It's amazing that they were able to build this quality of a structure back then in such harsh conditions. Fantastic photographs. I can't believe there are still eggs and everything there like this. It just looks as if they went out for a while and will be back later to cook dinner (in 1917 that is) .
